Case Study 1: Planning for Fair Allocation of Funding between Global North and Global South
At the start of Investigating Agricultural Soil Samples, a research collaboration between the Universities of York and Mahidol, the team met to discuss their values and work these into a project handbook. During this meeting, they covered how funding would be distributed. Mahidol raised that the money they received would be subject to extra financial checks and internal processes and so could not be spent as quickly as the team’s in York. To ensure that Mahidol could play an active role in producing research outputs and take advantage of travel opportunities – not just be part of the data collection stage – the team set a date for an early planning meeting in which they would map out a timeline for outputs to ensure that Mahidol researchers could identify dates for an early application to use their research funds at each stage.
